Make-York make fundraising debut - in style!

Local Young professionals’ networking group Make-York will be suited and booted for their first major fundraising event a week on Sunday (11th July). Members of the group, which was formed towards the end of last year will be donning “fancy dress” to take part in the annual York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge to raise money for local mental health charity Our Celebration - the twist is that the “fancy dress” is actually formal business wear!

Simon Rodgers, Team Captain of the Make-Our Celebration Team, explained the idea behind the dress code. “We wanted to do something a little different from the usual dressing-up for a charity event. The Race takes place on a Sunday, so we’re really hoping that our team will stand out from the crowd in our business attire!”.

Make-York formed just 9 months ago, but have already recruited over 200 members from a range of occupations including solicitors, accountants, project managers and business owners. Their networking events have attracted speakers including Sir Ron Cooke and Julian Sturdy MP, but the Dragon Boat Challenge represents the organisation’s first charity fundraising event, and they are hoping to help raise the profile of Our Celebration in the process.

Our Celebration’s Fundraising Officer Ian Savage commented “It is wonderful for a small local charity like Our Celebration to gain the support of Make-York, and we would like to thank them all for their efforts - they’ve been working really hard to gain sponsorship for their Dragon Boat, and we hope they will look fantastic on the day in their “fancy dress!” Mr Savage went on to say “All of the money that will come to Our Celebration from the Make-York team will go directly to supporting local people who are recovering from episodes of severe mental ill-health.”

Our Celebration was formed in 1986, and has been adopted by The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of York Cllr Mrs Susan Galloway, as one of two chosen charities for her term of office which started last month. Commenting, The Lord Mayor said “Make-York aim to promote the City of York to young professionals as a great place to live and work, and I’m delighted that they will be rowing in the Dragon Boat Challenge and raising funds to support one of my adopted charities, while raising the profile of the City at the same time.”

The York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on Sunday July 11th and is organised by the Rotary Club of York. To sponsor the Make-York Team, please visit www.justgiving.com/make-ourcelebration
